some of the locals upset by the loud music

... sorry to hear that about some our our more narrow-minded "Locals" ... Springboard brings in so much extra local trade (just ask the pub landlords) they can't help but benefit for it. One landlord was suggesting a twice-yearly event lol.

As for

overwhelming indifference
I think that perhaps there was some overwhelming knackerdness by the time Sunday came around (the Blue Bell for example was packed on the Saturday but much much quieter by the sunday), and things depended upon the acts performing, particularly if they'd brought their own crowd.

Overall I think if we managed to run bars dry of beer (for the second year in a row) and get the residents to compain about the noise, I think we did pretty well ;)

Keep the comments coming!!

Cheers

Doug

I think it was a great bash, but must be disappointing when a small minority of acts don't turn up and without apologising ??? ... not that this is an unknown phenomenon ...

as a visitor with one of the bands i didnt like the duke of cumberland set up at all its better to have a stage of some kind for a better visual stimulus as well as sound quality there is cosy and "cosy" not ideal really, think some bands were disspaointed. also if the pubs are making loads of cash then once again bands hould at least geta few drinks out of it. Its a bit much entertaining the crowd then adding to the bars profits without anything in return, its the bars getting richer, win win win!

Primarily I guess that the concept of Springboard is to put on a free festival, and to make this possible we kind of rely on the volunteer organisers giving their time and resources (including sound set-up) free (remember that their gig lasts all day, sometimes for three days) , and we rely on bands also not requiring reimbursement.

However I understand and take your point about the bar profits; Springboard festival itself as a voluntary "entity" made a loss of £51 this year, however undoubtedly the bars profited from the deluge of extra punters, and it would be great if they could contribute a pint or two for performers, and this might get raised when we're planning 2009.

However .... it's not really about the landlords and profits, rather it's down to breweries and targets. Despite the value to pubs that Springboard undoubtedly brings, we had two "scares" on the run up to this year's festival regarding breweries whingeing about "targets" (not profits - basically a target is when you make a profit, but someone in a big chair wants that to be even more the following year). There was a possibility that in one of these two venues Springboard wouldn't happen, and a possibility that in both venues the management might have been changed.

Thankfully for us it didn't happen, as the landlords in both cases are supportive of the festival. I think the idea of landlords committing a small part of their projected Springboard takings in the form of beer vouchers for bands might be supported by the individual landlords, but when their brewery chain are breathing down their necks looking for even more money, this might make it difficult for them.

Good point though, well-raised. :)

Doug
